Mennyt maailma to be published by December 2026.
The book Mennyt maailma takes you on a journey through time to Tampere in the early 1900s. It reveals what the city with its streets, squares, buildings and factories looked like in the two decades before Finland gained independence. In Europe, the time is called belle époque, a beautiful era of peace, prosperity and renewal, when a new style also emerged, art nouveau. At that time, Tampere’s skyline also changed, industry grew and the world of ideas was in turmoil, but everyday life in the wooden blocks and factory yards continued on its own path.
The book presents Tampere by district, their milieu and inhabitants. It tells the story of a city that grew and changed, but retained its own character and story. Some of the historical photographs in the richly illustrated book have only been discovered in recent years and have not been published before.
Antti Liuttunen is a researcher at the Vapriikki Photo Archive. He has written four books on the history of Tampere and has been a photo editor for sixteen local history works.
