FROM ANCIENT DRESSES TO SILK CAPS
Archaeological textile research from Pirkanmaa

PREORDER: publishing date 14.3.2026

This book brings together the latest research on textiles, clothing and research methods from the Iron Age and early modern period in Pirkanmaa. Archaeological remains of textiles, furs and accessories provide a diverse range of material that can be used to examine the clothing of people in the past and, more broadly, people's identity, social status, habitat, economy, connections and rituals. The book presents the results of the Vapriikki research and at the same time opens up perspectives on methods that are currently applied in international textile research - from microscopy and color chemistry to proteomics and ancient DNA. The Vilusenharju in Tampere and Mikkola in Ylöjärvi, located along the Pirkanmaa ridge, shed light on the life, death and social relations of communities during the Crusades (c. 1050–1200 AD). The ancient costumes of the Tampere region, which were studied and restored in the Vapriikki project, are based on the grave finds from these cemeteries, and this book provides patterns, instructions and tips for making them.
